Graphic Arts Building

73 Richmond Street West, Toronto, ON

Project History

In collaboration with the Sheppard Group as developers, Stinson brought to back to life a magnificent classical structure that sat mysteriously vacant in the heart of Toronto’s financial district.

Although mostly remembered as the original location of the famous Hy’s Steakhouse, the building’s cultural pedigree is much deeper, having originally been the headquarters and printing plant for the respected Saturday Night Magazine (Canada’s equivalent to the New Yorker) as well as the offices of an illustrations group called GRIP Advertising, the members of which also become known as “The Group of Seven” whose paintings eventually became world famous collectibles.

The renovation process revealed marble floors, coffered ceilings and stained glass panels, providing an incomparable sense of history to the residential and commercial units, amidst the surrounding forest of antiseptic office towers.
